MY FIRST WEEK AS A COLLEGE STUDENT

It was quite a sad day when I got into my family's car and waved goodbye to my hometown, Vigan. For 16 years, I had grown used to quiet roads, friendly faces and the comfort of living at home.

The day I left marked the end of my childhood and opened up a new chapter in my adult life. I would no longer have my mother and father around to help me when challenges arose. My college life was starting, and with that came many adjustments!

On my first day at college, I met several people from all parts of the world. Their personalities were quite different from what I had grown up knowing, but hey -college is a learning experience. Coming from St. Paul College, were the girls outnumber the guys, I felt really awkward studying in a school were guys outnumber the girls (my college just turned co-ed recently).

Being in college really requires hard work. It's very much different with high school life where in you could skip studying your lessons for the day and still survive the next day. In college, once you don't read your lessons, you'll forever regret it. When i was in high school, I would usually spend my weekends sleeping the whole day, watching tv, or pigging out until I'm totally exhausted. Now picture this: it's my first official weekend as a student in Manila and I'm spending my time in our dormitory studying 4 chapters of my Accounting book, spending a lot of time solving and analyzing problems, and reading my lessons in all my subjects. The only time I stood up from my chair was when I ate my meals and when I felt the need for a 15 minute power nap. Who could ever imagine that I, golda margareth argel, would be doing that on a beautiful and sunny weekend?! I even had to turn down my tita's invitation for us to watch Batman Begins just to be able to make sure that I get to study my lessons before Monday. But in the end, my studying did pay off. I think I left a pretty good impression to all my professors and classmates as well.

In these past few days, I’ve learned so much about living in a big city, being more social and learning how to take care of myself. I’ve learned a great deal about different cultures, city life and organization. The one discovery that is the most important, however, is the discovery of the person I was always too timid to show to the world. As a new individual, I will be more open to challenges in the future, and I will keep my eyes and ears open to only the good things in life!

I love this song by the Rascal Flatts but first heard it from American idol when Carrie Underwood performed it. But still, I'm pro-Bo eventhough he did not win. Hehehe. You should listen to it and understand the lyrics to really appreciate this sweet song.

Bless The Broken Road

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true

Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

food for thought

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

1. Why does Mickey Mouse wear pants and no shirt while Donald Duck wears a shirt and no pants?

2. When the kids take their picture with a mascot, yung tao ba sa loob ng mascot ngumingiti rin?

3. What kind of specie or creature is Grimace (of Mc Donalds) actually portraying?

4. Do the commercial and print ad models of sanitary napkins for women, wear the product while shooting the commercial or having the photo shoot?

5. Why do they sterilize the needles for lethal injections?

Do you know the answers? Share them naman oh... Nababaliw na ako eh.. Hehe!

I was in the cleaning mood last night. And as most of you know, cleaning up means digging through old stuff and most of the time, stumbling upon an object long forgotten. I found a lot of things that just made me reminisce the days when life was so much smoother and easier.

I feel like something inside me just wants to return to the past, the time in my life where the gift of friendship was tested and proved to be strong. I still remember fights over petty things that left some friendships in shattered pieces and some into stronger bonds.

There's this one fight that destroyed one of the most comfortable friendships I ever had. She and I used to laugh together over simple things. But academic competition suddenly turned her against me. We used to help each other with the assignments and projects that teachers mercilessly gave us, but she was never the same again.

I moved on, changed and met new friends who I became close with. The three of us were inseparable in school. We didn't have the same interests but we enjoyed each other's company. I had a good year with them, but then one morning, it suddenly felt different like they turned over new leaves overnight. Again, nothing was ever the same again.

All through the trials and challenges of growing up, one of my friends since elementary never left me though. He was there to listen, to support, even though we belonged to different classrooms in school. I told him about my problems, how I felt like an outsider to my friends who were changing faster than I could say, "highschool." Then to my surprise, he told me he was leaving the country and that it would be a long wait before he could come back. But thankfully, he continued to keep in touch and up to now, he is one of my bestfriends and shock absorbers.

Days passed and soon enough, I found myself belonging to a new group, a tight circle of friends who managed to stay together despite the tides of time. When almost all groups we knew of parted, theirs remained whole through the bad times and the good. I am happy that I found their group and they welcomed me with open arms and willing hearts. In a week's time, awkwardness was forgotten. In a month's time, I belonged like I've known them forever. Now, years past, I can say they've become a major part of my life.

As maturity dawned on me, I realized that being bitter was not the solution to the happiness that I have always wanted. The bestfriend-before-but-now-no-more issue was long gone.

The friendship I shared that was broken due to academic reasons, was healed and renewed. In my last year in high school, she became one of my closest friends and we became more open with each other. We helped each other out in terms of academics and emotional issues. Both of us even spent a few months crushing on the same guy, sharing stories about him, and giving the guy a code name just so others won't notice. Eventually, we got tired of him and had another guy prospect. Hahaha.

I also kept in touch with the two ladies I mentioned in the fourth paragraph. Another lady filled up my space in the group and soon enough, it was again a trio. I don't have any hard feelings on them replacing me instead I am grateful because it was a sign that times have changed. In the end, we became good friends and even got to hang out with each other a few times.

Friends are special people. We can't pick our family, and we're sorely limited in the number of them at any rate. Society dictates that we select a single mate. But our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the adjectives we choose. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life. With that, I truly, madly, deeply love my friends! :)

It's stupid, actually, the process of describing oneself, because the ones whom you can describe yourself well to are often the ones who already know you. Anwyay. I'm a living paradox. I would like to have as many close friends as possible but sometimes, my hesitation to approach people gets the better of me. I love life and everything about it. I know what I want and I'm happy with what I have and I can't ask for anything more. My self-description above just proves how mixed up the properties of my brain's hippocampus and parietal lobe are, so just get to know me if you don't.
